Pewter is known for being one of the easier metals to keep clean and it does not tarnish like silverplate or sterling silver. It will still get dirty, smudge, and acquire a patina in time. While some like the weathered look that it develops, if you don’t, it quite easy to clean.
The first step should usually be cleaning. With Pewter items, this can be done using a warm water and dishwashing liquid or soap solution. Gently wash the entire piece removing and dirt, tarnish, and debris. We do not recommend soaking the item. Once clean, rinse the item well to remove any residual soap. Using a soft cloth, dry the entire piece and buff.
For stubborn pewter items, we carry Pewter Wash by Hagerty. Apply the pewter wash liberally with a sponge or soft cotton cloth to the entire piece. Wash thoroughly to remove all dirt and tarnish. Rinse in clean warm water making to remove all residue. Dry with a soft cotton cloth.
